Chris Piotrowski — Challenge of Leadership

After being with the company for 28 years, Chris took the opportunity to enrol in LMA’s Challenge of Leadership course in September 2022.

Chris Piotrowski is a Project Supervisor with Nilsen WA Pty Ltd. Nilsen is a leading family-owned electro-technology company operating throughout Australia with offices in all the mainland capital cities. Leadership Management Australia (LMA) have partnered with Nilsen since 2013 to develop their leaders.

He believed his participation in the course would not only help him grow both personally and professionally, but also enhance his career opportunities. Chris was very focused on the fact that his role was to consistently improve the profit he was able to generate from the client projects he managed for the organisation.

In the early stages of the course, Chris decided to focus his attention and his Win-Win Course Goals on his working relationship with his team and his ability to improve both his own and his team member’s productivity and performance. To start, he set goals to run weekly meetings and to improve his own performance through effective delegation. Chris applied himself throughout the course achieving all the Win-Win Course Goals he set for himself and completing his workplace project on schedule. Throughout the course, he was supported by his Manager/Mentor Mark Watson.

The three most important concepts that Chris gained from his involvement in the Challenge of Leadership were:

  • The importance of training and developing people to achieve a High Performance team.
“While focusing on training and developing my team members, we discussed the outcomes of learning new skills. I encouraged individuals to believe in their own ability and capacity to learn and grow”.
  • Establishing the right framework for a High Performance team. “I am laying the foundation for success by:
-Clearly defining and communicating the goals and priorities for the team
-Determining and documenting the roles and responsibilities for each of the team members
-Establishing processes and systems to monitor their performance and results.”
  • Empowering individuals with the responsibility to complete specific activities as an important part of implementing the team plans. “I will continue demonstrating to individual team members that I have full trust in them to implement their allocated activities as well as encouraging them by always being positive prior, during and after the activity.”

Chris’s LMA Client Support/Coach Jo Rawson stated “Chris was a self-starter. He was always self-motivated to complete his assignments and look for ways to improve his own and his team’s performance. Achieving his Win-Win Course Goals boosted his confidence and sense of achievement. Not only did we see tremendous personal growth in Chris, but also excellent improvement in his Leadership Dexterity”.

Director of LMA Sales and Marketing, Chace Sexton says “Since 2013, LMA have been proud to be partners in Nilsen’s commitment to leadership development. We have now worked with over 170 of their leaders who have participated in and graduated from one or more of our 3 levels of leadership courses. We are continuously inspired when we hear of the growth and success achieved by people such as Chris”.
