Client Case Study

McCain Foods Australia

McCain Foods Australia Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the global McCain Foods Limited, a world leader in the frozen food industry.

In Australia McCain have over 1,000 employees across multiple production sites with a sales presence in all major cities manufacturing quality products including french fries, appetisers, pizzas, vegetables, desserts and prepared meals.

McCain believes that “People with passion are the key to our success – passion for continuous improvement, for teamwork, for learning and for delivering results”.

This commitment to continuous improvement and the development of their people led McCain Foods Australia to engage Leadership Management Australia (LMA) in late 2019 to conduct an Operational Excellence program with 13 of their team at their Smithton site in Tasmania. This initial implementation was disrupted due to the COVID 19 pandemic and resumed in March 2023. Although some of the Participants who were selected from multiple functions across the site were initially a litle sceptical, as soon as the training commenced, they embraced this opportunity for professional development. They worked together in interactive cross functional teams to not only develop new skills, but to also identify opportunities for improvement.

Under the leadership of Bhavit (Plant Manager) and Kate (HR Business Partner), the Participants developed the plans for, and commenced the implementation of, several significant improvement projects to create improvement in both quality and productivity.

These projects included:
Improving quality control by increasing grading frequency

  • Sanitation improvement
  • Converting Mechanical Cuter #3 from imperial to metric
  • Reorganising the Dry Store
  • Cuter deck water and starch recovery

Nihal (LMA Facilitator) provided support and coaching to all team members to ensure positive outcomes would be achieved from these projects.

LMA Director of Sales and Marketing, Chace Sexton explained “We look forward to continuing this partnership with McCain Foods. The company is truly committed to continuous improvement and developing its people”.

Kate Cole, HR Business Partner at McCain Foods Australia quoted “Our experience of the Operational Excellence course delivered through LMA was very positive. The facilitation delivered by Nihal was excellent; his passion for the LEAN principles was evident and he provided a very engaging experience for our participants.

Nihal and the LMA team actively sought our feedback on the delivery of the course material to ensure it was relevant to our site, and delivered in a way that was as cohesive as possible. Our participants delivered multiple plans for improved efficiencies because of the learning. We look forward to seeing these plans progressed, and for our participants to share their learning within their wider teams”.
