Baden Norwood – Challenge of Leadership

Baden saw his involvement in the course as an opportunity to advance his career through developing his leadership qualities and dexterity.

Nilsen, is an electro-technology company that has been a leader in their industry for over 100 years. The organisation is totally committed to developing their leaders. Over recent years, they have enrolled many of their people in leadership development courses conducted by Leadership Management Australia (LMA). One such individual is Baden Norwood, a newly appointed Leading Hand at Nilsen WA, who was enrolled in LMA’s Challenge of Leadership (COL) in September of 2022.

Baden saw his involvement in the course as an opportunity to advance his career through developing his leadership qualities and dexterity. At the beginning of the 9 month course, Baden and Andy worked with Jo Rawson, Baden’s LMA Client Support/Coach, to determine a number of Win-Win Course Goals to be completed during the COL. One of these goals was to complete the client site project he was working on at the time under budget. They also identified a significant workplace project for Baden to implement and complete during the second half of the course.

Baden was an excellent contributor during the interactive workshops. He invested a substantial amount of time and effort in applying the new concepts he was learning back into improvements in the workplace. Jo noted “It was an absolute pleasure to work with Baden. He was focused on achieving his Win-Win Course Goals and workplace project whilst also completing the assessment activities to achieve his qualification.”

Not only did Baden achieve all the other goals he set but completed that specific client site project with almost a 100% better margin than originally estimated.

His workplace project culminated with the installation of a 360-degree camera to track site progress and monitor QA. The benefit – a significant competitive edge with better reporting and quality assurance.

As a result of participating in the course Baden is now more focused on scheduling regular times to meet with his people to communicate and address minor issues before they develop into bigger problems. He has found that he is communicating with his team better, using both written information and diagrams. He has also become accomplished in using Active Listening and providing positive feedback. Baden commented “I now delegate more tasks to experienced team members and I get them to assist in the training and mentoring of junior trades people and apprentices”.

His LMA Facilitator, Camille Bath observed “This comment demonstrates the tremendous leadership growth that Baden achieved over the duration of the course. He graduated as an extremely competent leader”.

LMA are proud to have supported Nilsen’s commitment to investing in and developing their people. Over 170 of the Nilsen team have graduated through our courses nationally.
