Client Case Study

CBS

CBS makes life easy for Builders

CBS is a medium sized manufacturing business that specialises in internal window coverings for builders. Their extensive product range is manufactured locally in Melbourne ensuring high quality production and no offshore lead times.

CBS engaged with LMA to deliver a program that would engage, upskill, and empower their people to drive a culture of continuous improvement. Whilst they had dabbled in Lean previously, Paul and Jenny wanted to create real lasting change whilst upskilling their people with nationally recognized qualifications. I was also to heavily support them in the successful set up, install and operation requirements for some new technology and equipment to maximize team performance and bottom-line results.

To offer our employees a qualification whilst empowering them in their everyday tasks has resulted in real workplace change. Graeme has integrated himself into CBS, a familiar figure that the staff look forward to seeing and running their ideas by. They know their opinions are important, they take pride in their environment and they suggest and take part in continual improvement”. Jenny Walton

Throughout the implementation of the program, there has been a significant increase in the utilisation of visual management and visual factory tools. Combining this with the establishment of regular Toolbox Talks have created a significant improvement in communication, clarity, and prioritsation. The Team also embraced Standard Work, which has now been documented across the business to ensure all quality, safety and output goals are achieved on a regular basis. This improvement has come from the Team engaging in CI to drive simple low-cost tools and projects provided throughout the learning process.

To date these initiatives have delivered some fantastic tangible results including;

  • Improved Roller Assembly output by 22%. Achieved through process mapping the flow of work through assembly area and identifying/reducing waste.
  • Improved the first time through quality rate of shutter manufacture by 20%. Achieved through a Go-No Go gauge Project implementation that has eliminated common quality issues.

CBS employees have become more engaged in their roles as they have been able to not only identify improvement initiatives but are supported in implementing the changes to achieve them. They have become more customer focused and align everything they do around the expectations of internal and external stakeholders. Whilst the participating staff members have predominately come from manufacturing staff, managers and supervisors, this cultural change has flown through the remainder of the business providing positive change.
