Linda Sobalbarro – High Performance Management
The most impactful tools I’ve applied are effective delegation and empowerment
I embarked on LMA’s High Performance Management (Diploma of Leadership & Management) Program to enhance my leadership skills and prepare myself for the next step in my career—becoming a General Manager. This program offered me a pathway to grow strategically and gain the tools needed to lead effectively at a senior level.
Professionally, I aimed to build the skills and confidence required to oversee a property at a General Manager level, with a focus on strategic planning, team leadership, and financial management. Personally, I wanted to push myself outside my comfort zone, gain mentorship from industry leaders, and develop a leadership style that inspires my team while driving results. I also hoped to make meaningful contributions to QT Melbourne and the broader EVT group.
The most impactful tools I’ve applied are effective delegation and empowerment, as well as effective prioritisation of high payoff activities. Understanding how to delegate effectively while empowering team members has transformed how I manage my team, improving accountability and nurturing leadership potential within the team. Learning to identify and focus on activities that deliver the greatest value has significantly enhanced both my time management and decision-making. This skill has allowed me to balance immediate operational needs with long-term strategic goals, ensuring my efforts are consistently aligned with the hotel’s priorities.
Through the program, I achieved measurable professional growth, demonstrated by my ability to step into higher-level responsibilities and support the General Manager in her absence. Key achievements include leading impactful projects, improving staff engagement, and creating personalised guest experiences. On a broader scale, I’ve fostered a more engaged and motivated team while driving operational efficiencies.
Collaborating with like-minded peers and mentors was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the program. Sharing ideas and learning from real-world scenarios brought valuable insights into leadership challenges. I particularly enjoyed working on the final project, where I could apply the tools and strategies from the program to a tangible, impactful initiative at QT Melbourne. Presenting to Jane Hastings, EVT’s CEO, was a career milestone I’ll always treasure.
I would strongly recommend this program to others. It is transformative for anyone looking to grow into a leadership role. The practical, hands-on approach provides tools that can be immediately applied to real-world challenges. The mentorship and networking opportunities are invaluable, equipping participants with a strategic mindset to drive both personal growth and organisational success.
