Client Case Study
Nilsen Australia
Nilsen is a family owned and operated business with over 100 years of continuous service in the electrical industry.
Founded in 1916, the business maintains the traditions today on which the company was built – Service, Reliability and Quality.
With offices in all mainland Australian capital cities. They provide expertise in the electro technology sector including contracting, switchboards, communications and data, electrical and high energy services and switchboards.
Richard Lane is General Manager of Nilsen South Australia (SA) and has been with the organisation for more than eight years. When Nilsen SA first connected with LMA, the organisation was looking to reinvigorate its cadetship program for emerging leaders and provide a more consistent approach and tangible outcomes for all participants – in SA and across the nation.
Through collaborative discussions, LMA’s Success Strategies for Team Leaders and Supervisors (SSTLS) course was identified as the most appropriate to assist Nilsen in identifying emerging leadership talent. Creating development opportunities for both individuals and teams whilst developing tomorrow’s leaders and managers.
Richard notes “The course was originally structured and tailored to suit Nilsen’s needs and over the ensuing years has evolved to be the primary entry point for developing our leaders. Many of our SSTLS graduates have been promoted to more senior positions, providing succession planning options and pathways for our talented people – and helping Nilsen to retain the people we need to sustain and grow the organisation into the future.”
The leadership development courses delivered over the years have benefitted Nilsen SA in numerous ways through appropriate design, delivery and impact both individually and collectively. Driving lasting attitudinal change, measurable results (set to pre-determined objectives) and an identifiable return on investment.
In parallel with the leadership courses, LMA’s Operational Excellence (LMA Opex) team has been working with more than 40 of Nilsen’s people to engage, upskill and empower them to drive a culture on continuous improvement.
These on-site courses have provided countless opportunities to improve systems, processes, and people. Helping the Team clearly identify and remove all elements of waste to maximise performance, productivity and profitability.
The extent to which the LMA Opex and Leadership courses have been customised to Nilsen’s needs helps to ensure the courses are appropriately positioned, operationally suitable and excite and inspire Participants to be involved and active in their learning and application of ideas and tools.
The strong relationship forged between Nilsen and LMA over the past years looks set to continue well into the future. Key courses will be rolled out in other states and the benefits experienced by Nilsen SA will be enjoyed by other parts of the Nilsen business nationally. There will always be a need to develop individuals, teams, departments and organisations more broadly and LMA is excited to be collaborating with Richard and his colleagues in the wider Nilsen organisation to assist and support this development.
